Roundtable Discussion on “Trade Wars: Causes and Consequences”
Friday, 14 September 2018, 4pm

The international frameworks that have underpinned global trade for decades are under political pressure. The escalation of trade tensions between major powers has opened up the growing probability of a full-blown trade war and raised questions about the future of the global trading system.

This roundtable discussion will focus on a new paper on developments in global trade written by two of the leading architects of the current trading system – former United States (US) Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez and former European Union (EU) Trade Commissioner and United Kingdom Business Secretary Peter Mandelson – offering a diagnosis of the current predicament of global trade and near to mid-term challenges it is likely to face. During their time in office, both led trade negotiations on behalf of the US and EU respectively; in the private sector, both are at the helm of advisory firms that support businesses reliant on global trade.

Organised in partnership with Singapore Summit, the roundtable will convene global and regional business leaders to discuss recent developments and to reflect on how the erosion of the long-dominant consensus on free trade norms and the divergence of leading economies’ views about the design of the international trading system will impact governments, businesses, and investors.

Private Session on “Reinventing the Asian Conglomerate”
Friday, 14 September 2018, 3pm

Bain & Company, in partnership with Singapore Summit, is hosting a private session to discuss the topic of "Reinventing the Asian Conglomerate", based on key findings from Bain’s new study on the performance and potential of Asian conglomerates.

Bain’s continuing research has analysed the financial performance of conglomerates since 2003. Conglomerates had many things working in their favour as they held an advantage in everything from regulations to talent to capital. However, as Asia's markets developed, those benefits steadily diminished and the conglomerate advantage compressed. Today, conglomerates in India and Southeast Asia no longer hold an advantage in total shareholder returns over pure plays and have begun to underperform in revenue growth and margin improvement, according to the latest conglomerates study. Unless conglomerates in these regions reinvent themselves, investors will call for breaking them up – the fate of many conglomerates in the West.

Till Vestring, Advisory Partner and co-author to the Conglomerates report together with Wade Cruse, Partner, will discuss how Asian conglomerates can renew themselves in a critical time of digital disruption and rising competition from global technology powerhouses.
